On this date ...

1977: Seven Clovis High School students were competing for the title of football homecoming queen.

The "lovely girls" vying for the crown included sophomores Joni Jones, daughter of Patty Jones; and Stephanie Stratton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norm Stratton; juniors Sheila Snipes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Snipes; and Lynn Schmid, daughter of Lt. Col. and Mrs. Robert Schmid; and seniors Gail Lewis, daughter of Elouise Brown; Shelly Smithee, daughter of Charlotte Smithee; and Yvonne Griego, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Griego.

Griego captured the crown a few days later.

1967: A bull owned and shown by Roosevelt County ranchers Olin and Cleo Ainsworth topped the Hereford division at the New Mexico State Fair.

"A Real Onward 596" won the grand champion bull trophy for the Ainsworth father and son.

Cleo Ainsworth was president of the New Mexico Hereford Association, and was also a member of the New Mexico Livestock Commission.
