Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Honors - Sept. 24

Wendel Sloan, a Sunday columnist for The Eastern New Mexico News, captured an honorable mention award in the humorous columns category in the 2017 National Federation of Women National Communications Contest.

Sloan received the award for “I once survived a hairy situation” about his body hair being mistaken for a marine mammal and for “Fundraiser makes for great lyrics” about a Methodist fundraising song titled “Kill a Moose for Jesus.”

The judges’ comments included, “These are amusing – a bit off-beat, but enjoyable. They were also truly humorous. Some entries in this category struggled to be funny, but you hit the mark easily, even though you’re a bit quirky.”

Sloan won first place in New Mexico in April, with the state winners advancing to the national competition.
