Baughman scores hat trick, Clovis wins 4-1

ALBUQUERQUE — They say revenge is a dish best served cold, and Clovis senior Markus Baughman gave Manzano an ice-cold lunch in a 4-1 road win for the Wildcats on Saturday.

While Baughman was denied on a few breakaways in the matchup against the Monarchs last year, he made up for it on Saturday with a hat trick.

“Last year when we played them at their house he had three or four opportunities he didn’t put away,” Clovis coach Greg Trujillo said. “So he made amends. This year he was able to convert on those opportunities.”

Baughman opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he found the back of the net off a cross from Noel Caldera.

Manzano evened up the scoring just a few minutes later to make it 1-1 at the half before Baughman put the Wildcats ahead for good with a shot from outside the 18 that deflected off the post and in for a goal.

Baughman completed his hat trick 11 minutes later when he chipped the ball over the goalkeeper from about 35 yards out.

Jonathen Puga scored five minutes later off a pass from Kade Jones to complete the scoring.

Trujillo said he played around with the team’s formations, playing a bit more defensive in the opening half and Clovis showed off better ball movement in the second half as its offense started clicking.

Trujillo was happy with the Wildcats ability to hold Monarchs senior David Hernandez off the scoreboard, who entered the game with seven goals through nine games.

“We marked him up pretty good and pretty much took him out of it and shut him down,” Trujillo said.
