Floyd tops Hondo for first win of season

FLOYD — When it's your day, it's your day. The Floyd Broncos proved that in Friday afternoon's 6-Man football game against Hondo Valley, as the Broncos shut out the Eagles 32-0.

The victory is the first of the season for Floyd (1-3), which had been outscored 167-20 through their first three games.

"Hondo and us have had a history, and our kids have been hungry," Floyd coach Steve Foust said. "They've been working their backsides off. They have great attitudes and this is just rewarding. There's a lot of things that they improved on."

Floyd marched 47 yards on eight plays on its second drive, as running back Juan Delgado punched it in from 4 yards out, giving the Broncos an early 6-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Floyd covered 53 yards in just five plays, as Delgado went to work again, and even capped off the scoring drive with an extra point of his own, extending the Bronco lead to 13-0.

Delgado's strong day was far from finished, however. One possession later, Delgado scored after five-straight runs, gaining another 17 yards, including the 5-yarder to add to the Floyd lead.

"Juan is our workhorse, our leader," Foust explained. "He carries the ball, he gets it done. If he doesn't do well, we're in trouble. He's smart, aggressive and just plays with a lot of heart."

Delgado would go on to add two more scores in the second half, as runs of 13 and 31 yards found the end zone to inflate the Bronco lead to 32-0.

While Delgado went on to rush for 154 of the Broncos' 256 rushing yards and all five of the team's scores, the Bronco defense was equally impressive in stopping the Eagle (1-3) offense.

Hondo reached Floyd territory just a handful of times throughout the day, as the Eagles struggled to get anything going. In fact, Hondo had negative (-5) rushing yards on the day, and just 49 total yards in all.

For Foust, that kind of effort is precisely what had been lacking through the Broncos' first three games of the season.

"Defensively, (my players) did their jobs. They stayed in their lanes, they put pressure the way they're supposed to, they contained," Foust said. "Six guys are flying to the ball, tackling - I'm very proud of them."
