HOBBS — The Clovis high school boys and girls cross country teams cruised to first place Thursday afternoon at the Hobbs Invitational.
The boys meet consisted of 45 competitors and six teams with Clovis winning big with a score of 22, followed by Carlsbad (57) and Southcrest (85).
Clovis’ Jose Salas lead the meet with a time of 16:25 coming in first followed by Clovis’ Juan Fuentes coming in second with a time of 16:27. Clovis had six competitors each making it within the top 10 for the easy team win.
T.J Greg came in fourth (17:09), Dominic Moreno came in seventh (17:34), Jerrik Maldonado followed behind coming in eighth (17:39), and Bryce Lentz rounded up the top 10 for the Cats coming in ninth (17:44).
“You know, we’ve been practicing in this cooler weather recently and it was 85 degrees today which kind of made an impact slowing our guys down,” said Clovis head coach Mark Bussen. “I am very proud of my guys. It was a pretty good day for sure, and they really stepped up.”
Defending champion Hobbs did not compete. Its junior varsity finished fifth out of the six scoring teams.
Kelsey McNaughton led the meet against Carlsbad with a time of 19:46, helping the Cats in their successful win over the Cavemen.
The girls consisted of 25 competitors, with four Wildcats in the top ten.
Avery Arnett came in fifth (22:16), Faith Hays followed in sixth (22:20), and Samantha Castro rounded up the top ten for the Cats in tenth (23:08). Layla Walley finished in 11th (23:12) and completing the runners for Clovis was Sidney Stratton at 12th (23:45).
“I am very pleased with my girls,” said Bussen. “They ran very well today as they prepare for state, and they all each have goals and accomplishments to fulfill which they did today, having more opportunities going into state.”
Clovis is back in action next Saturday at Ruidoso.
