Regional football round-up

CLOVIS — Seven regional teams were in action Friday night.

Mountainair 66, Dora 48

With the injury bug still on the Coyotes’ side, having Kaull Burton and Joseph Urioste back really made a difference for Dora on offense and defense.

“Kaull and Joseph really looked good out there,” said Dora head coach Mason McBee. “They really stepped up and looked healthy all the way through.”

Burton and Urioste had been out several weeks after their win against Gateway Christian on Sept. 22.

Dora’s junior quarterback Bradley Ramirez made his second week at quarterback against the Mustangs (5-1,1-1) a successful one as he completed 8-of-16 passes for 154 total yards. Ramirez also rushed 19 times for 178 total yards and two touchdowns on the night.

“Having Bradley start these past couple of weeks have really helped us a lot,” McBee said. “He did very well alongside Kaull and Joseph. He has been stepping up a lot during practice and it’s showing in the games.”

Kaull Burton led in touchdowns as he had 20 carries for 140 yards and three touchdowns.

According to McBee, Dora (4-3, 1-2) held on quite a bit on Friday night, but mistakes got the best of them.

“I honestly think we should have came out with a win,” McBee said. “We had some times where we fumbled the ball and they recovered, and a time where we were at the one yard line and they recovered a fumble and ran in all the way back for a touchdown. So if we limited our errors we could have won.”

Dora continues district play as it will host Logan 7 p.m. Friday.

Farwell 43, Sudan 13

On Friday night, Farwell ended their two-game losing streak as they topped the Hornets at home.

Farwell’s LeeRoy Cervantes added the first points of the game with a 2-yard touchdown, followed by Miguel Vasquez late in the first to put the Steers (3-3, 1-0) up 14-0. Sudan’s Austin Conley quickly added six points on the board in the second quarter, but the Steers posted a second-half shutout until Sudan’s Christian Montes completed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Ruben Rodriguez with a little over a minute to go in the fourth.

Farwell had 380 total yards, with Ethan Stancell completing seven of his eight pass attempts for 127 yards and a touchdown. Miguel Vasquez rushed 16 times finishing with 167 total yards (avg. 10.4 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.

Sudan (1-5, 0-1) had their offense led by Conley with 21 rushes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Conley went 6-of-16 in the air, throwing for 126 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Farwell visits Smyer on Friday.

Santa Rosa 55, Texico 13

During Friday night’s match-up against Santa Rosa (4-3, 1-0), the Wolverines (1-7, 0-2) stayed close in the first before Santa Rosa put things together.

“They figured out our new defense and offense within the middle of the first that allowed them to pull ahead quickly,” said Texico coach Pat Crowley. “On the offensive side, the plays looked very similar and they decided to switch some things up to stop us.”

Texico’s points came from Craig Ray, who received a touchdown pass from Brayden Wines, and Isaac Ortiz on a punt recovered in the end zone after a Robbie Clauss block.

Texico is on a bye this week, and hosts Raton Oct. 27.

Melrose 60, Logan 8

The Melrose Buffaloes may be done with the regular season. And by the look of Friday night, they might as well be.

Melrose (7-0, 3-0) has beaten all six New Mexico teams it has faced via the 50-point mercy rule, and the only team that went the distance was Mancos, Colorado, which the Buffaloes defeated 48-0.

“It’s safe to say after Friday’s win that we have the No. 1 seed,” said Melrose head coach Dickie Roybal. “Our guys did very well, we have been able to improve on things that needed improving. But at the same time it’s hard to tell with a team like Logan. They’re a good group, very young; they did come out and hit us. Now we’re in a tough situation since we have to wait so long to play again.”

Melrose has a bye this week, but Roybal said there’s a chance its Oct. 27 game against Springer could be canceled.

Muleshoe 17, Slaton 14

Muleshoe looked to have started where it left off from its last match — a 33-3 blowout win over Idalou on Sept. 29. The Mules (2-3, 1-0) came out on Saturday carrying their momentum defeating Slaton 17-14 in their first match of district play.

Muleshoe head coach David Wood wanted to come into this matchup not overlooking what Slaton is capable of doing rather than looking at what they have not been able to accomplish in their previous games. With that mindset, the Mules were able make adjustments and made sure their offense made the plays they needed to get their win.

Muleshoe hosts a River Road team that looks to have had their fair share of struggles this season. It’s 0-6 coming into Friday night’s contest at Benny Douglas Stadium.

Bovina 41, Smyer 0

Bovina came into Friday night’s game against Smyer after suffering a close loss to Hale Center on Sept. 29, but it looked like Bovina capitalized on Smyers lack of defense they’ve shown all season.

The Mustang’s (4-2, 1-0) added the first points of the game that came off of a touchdown pass within the third minute of the first quarter. With four minutes to go in the first, Bovina added another, extending their lead 14-0.

After Tahoka, Smyer (1-5, 0-1) has not had much luck on the offensive side, being unable to finish strong in the last few minutes of a game, or unable to use their defense to control the tempo, allowing their opponents offense to control the game. Bovina saw that and used their offense to control the momentum which led to a huge win in their first district match of the season.

Bovina will be visiting Springlake-Earth next week to continue their district play. Springlake-Earth is coming off of a win by forfeit over Morton.

Lake Arthur 34, Floyd 16

Floyd (1-5, 0-2) couldn’t hold on against Lake Arthur (4-3, 3-1) Friday night. The loss puts the Broncos at a two-game losing streak since beating Hondo Valley Sept. 29.

Floyd visits defending state champion San Jon 3 p.m. Friday.
