1972: The 25th annual Clovis cattle festival opened at the Ranchers and Farmers Livestock Association for a two-day run.

Included on the agenda were a cattle show with a slew of trophies to be awarded to outstanding herds, a "Coffee for the Ladies" in the Ladies Lounge; and a dollar-a-plate barbecue hosted by the Cattle Capitol Cowbelles.

Officials said 4,500 cattle were expected in the special sale that took place on the second day, with "odd cattle" cattle slated to sell from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and "show cattle" on the auction block starting at 1 p.m.

1962: Mrs. J.K. Hilliard of Portales was the guest speaker at the Wesleyan Service Guild of the Elida Methodist Church.

She gave a book report on "The Gift" by Dorothy Clark Wilson to 20 members and guests.

Mrs. R.E. Self and Mrs. Finis Cannon served pumpkin pie afterward, along with coffee, punch, and cracker sandwiches, all arranged beautifully on a lace tablecloth decorated with brown and orange driftwood and marigolds, and lit by two orange candles, according to Elida News reporter Velma Hathcock.
