Prep volleyball: Portales wins in four at Hope Christian

ALBUQUERQUE — The Portales volleyball team earned a key district road win on Tuesday, as the Rams downed Hope Christian in Four sets. With the win, Portales maintains a first place lead over Moriarty in the 4A/District 4 standings.

The Rams (13-4, 3-0) took the opening set, 25-20, before the Huskies (8-8, 1-2) tied things up with a 25-17 win in set No. 2. From there, Portales took control of the match in the final two sets, 25-22 and 25-15.

“I don’t think we played great,” Rams coach Charity Gomez explained. “We had a few too many attack errors. But, we were really good in side-out. It’s awesome to get a win on the road in district against a great team. We are one step closer to our goal and I’m so proud of the girls. Now, it’s back to work.”

Sarah Blaeser led the Rams with 34 assists, while Zamorye Cox had 27 digs and Lindsay Blakey had 13 kills. In all, five players had at least 10 or more digs, including Cox, Blaeser, Jessie Campbell, Aaliyah Austin and Alexis Garcia.

The Rams will get back to work on Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso. From there, Portales will finish the season with home matches next week against Moriarty and Hope Christian.
