DENTON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University woman’s soccer team traveled on the road Friday to face Texas Woman’s.
With the Greyhounds trailing 1-0, Ariel Lopez notched the equalizer. Neither team scored in the sudden-death overtime sessions and the Greyhounds posted their fifth tie of the year.
The Greyhounds (3-7-5, 2-4-3) fell to a quick 1-0 deficit as Haley Ward scored the first point in the 18th minute for Texas Woman’s (4-7-4, 1-5-3).
Throughout the remainder of the first half and a large majority of the second, both teams remained at a standstill before Lopez forced a tie in the 82nd minute. Mirka Zamarripa had a couple of shot attempts with one on goal for the Greyhounds.
Statistically the game was close throughout. Despite Texas Woman’s 15 shot attempts, they only managed to land four on goal, as ENMU had three of its six shots land on goal.
It doesn’t get easier for the Hounds this weekend as they travel to face Texas A&M Commerce Sunday (9-3-3, 5-3-1) as a part of their four-game road trip.
The top six teams in the seven-team LSC will make the playoffs. The Greyhounds are in fifth and could still overtake West Texas A&M for fourth, but they’ll need a lot of help. The Buffaloes are up six points with three games to play. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will host first-round games, while the top two teams receive first-round byes.
Men’s soccer falls Thursday — On Thursday, ENMU’s men’s soccer team started its three-match homestand with a 1-0 loss to UT Permian Basin at Greyhound Stadium. The loss drops ENMU to 3-11-1 on the season and 2-9 in Heartland Conference play.
The Greyhounds and Falcons both took a scoreless tie going into the locker room at half-time.
The Falcons (7-6-1; HC 6-5) finally broke the scoreless drought in the 63rd minute with Brandon Lee finding Jorge Murillo for the only score of the game. Christopher Mesquita attempted four shots, three on goal, but none were able to sneak past Alec Sproule of the Falcons. The Falcons outshot ENMU 23-13, with an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.The Hounds host West Texas A&M today at 1 p.m.
Javelinas top volleyball team in four — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team couldn’t pull out a win on the road against Texas A&M Kingsville on Friday. The Greyhounds lost 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 14-25, 24-25) and fall to an overall record 8-14 and 5-7 in Lone Star Conference play.
Sarah Tuioti-Mariner broke double digits (13) alongside Brooklyn Biel (10) in kills. Jasmine Gannon had nine and Amanda Dietz had eight on the night for the Hounds. On the defensive side, Andrea Aguilar had 17 total digs in the match and 23 assists on the night.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Monday against in-state rival Western New Mexico at 6 p.m. at Greyhound Arena.
