Area football wrapup: Local teams win big

CLOVIS— A pair of area high school teams were on byes, but nearly everybody else won and won big.

Dora 54, Logan 26

Wesley Poling scored twice, and Dora got it to the running clock before the Longhorns scored in the final minutes.

The Longhorns (2-6, 1-2) actually led early in the second, but Poling rushed for a 10-yard score to give the Coyotes (5-3, 2-2) the lead for good. Kaull Burton added a 20-yard touchdown in the first half.

“Our guys did very well overall,” said Dora head coach Mason McBee. “Logan busted us a little bit and ran the ball on us, but once we settled in and let Wesley get situated, we were able to throw and run the ball like we needed and make our stops on defense.”

The Coyotes look to focus on getting healthy this week as they enter a bye week going into the first round of playoffs.

Farwell 27, Smyer 0

The Farwell Steers dominated in their shutout win over Smyer.

Farwell’s Miguel Vasquez put the Steers (4-3, 2-0) right on the board mid way into the first quarter off of a 3-yard run. A little over three minutes later, Ethan Stancell completed a 60-yard touchdown pass to Jose Rodriguez, putting the Steers up 14-0 early in the game. To seal the win, Stancell completed a 13-yard pass to LeeRoy Cervantes for a touchdown late in the second, followed by Vasquez’ 28-yard rushing touchdown four minutes into the third.

Stancell completed 10 of his 21 passing attempts and had a total of 163 passing yards and two touchdowns. Miguel Vasquez rushed 18 times for 175 yards. The Steers had a total of 381 total offensive yards to 21 for Smyer.

“We played extremely well early on,” said Farwell head coach Danny Brittain. “Our offense did great, but our defense played spot on; I believed they got only one first down all first half.” Brittain also had the opportunity to play some of his younger guys. “We gave our starters a rest in the second half,” Brittain said. “Playing the young guys didn’t hurt us and it gives the starters some time to prepare for this week.”

Farwell will visit Springlake-Earth this Friday night at 6 p.m. MDT as the Steers continue district play.

Muleshoe 40, River Road 0

In the second game of district play, Muleshoe quickly took advantage of River Road’s defensive secondary and became unstoppable in the air.

Yoel Reyes added the first points of the game for Muleshoe (3-4, 2-0) with a 70-yard punt return. Reyes didn’t stop there as he added their second touchdown with a 20-yard catch from Luke Del Toro. Michael Lozano also added a 40-yard scoring run.

“We played well,” said Muleshoe head coach David Wood. “We just concentrated on defense and did what we had to do on offense.”

Luke Del Toro completed 14 of his 21 pass attempts for186 yards and three touchdowns. The Mules rushed a total of 31 times for 113 total yards, with Lozano having 12 of those carries for 78 yards.

Bovina 41, Springlake-Earth 6

In Bovina’s match-up with Springlake-Earth (1-5, 0-1), the Mustangs shut out the Wolverines in a little under three quarters of play before the Wolverines could score their first touchdown with just 15 minutes left in the contest.

The Mustangs’ last touchdown didn’t come until late in the fourth quarter..

Bovina (5-2, 2-0) returns to action November 3. as it will host Farwell at 6:30 p.m. MDT.

San Jon 37, Floyd 36

Floyd had an even match-up on Friday against defending state champs San Jon, but came up just short to the Coyotes.

“I believe we played a lot better this game,” said Floyd head coach Steve Foust. “The execution was a lot better, and after they took the lead we came back and took the lead for about two minutes. We did have some minor mistakes this game, but we cut those down and came in playing, but they took the game late in the fourth.”

Melrose picks up game

Melrose (7-0) had a bye this week, and Springer has already called Buffaloes coach Dickie Roybal to say it won’t have enough players for next week’s scheduled game.

In the interim, the Buffaloes have picked up a 3:15 p.m. Wednesday contest with the Clovis junior varsity at Leon Williams Stadium.

“They’ll run an eight-man defense against us, we’ll run an 11-man defense against them,” Roybal said. “It will be more of a scrimmage situation, just so we can stay fresh.”

The three-time defending eight-man champs are all but assured the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye with a 7-0 record and no win closer than 48 points. Playing Clovis, Roybal said, prevents the team from going into the playoffs a month after last seeing another team.
