1987: Pearl Amelia "Pat" Thomas, a kindergarten teacher at Lockwood Elementary School in Clovis, was selected as the New Mexico Teacher of the Year.
The winning teachers from all 50 states were invited to a national symposium in Florida on excellence in education, where they were joined by one outstanding secondary school principal from each state.
Thomas was slated to speak at the symposium about "Invent America!," a national program to increase emphasis on inventions, and early prevention of school failure, a preschool screening program.
1957: A ribbon cutting and two building dedications were held in conjunction with homecoming at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.
Members of the board of regents cut the ribbon on the new Music Building, which featured 75 rooms, including a large rehearsal hall, a recording studio, classrooms, private offices, and student lounges.
Chaves Hall, a 64-room residence for male students, and Harding Hall, a 25-room residence for female students, were also dedicated during festivities. Chaves Hall had recently been completed, while Harding Hall had been in use for a year.
