1977: The Clovis campus of Eastern New Mexico University purchased an additional 20 acres of land to give it a total of 60 acres for its "east campus" location.

The land was purchased from the estate of the late Erwin Schepps, and it joined land that included 25 acres donated by Schepps during his lifetime.

Clovis campus Dean Robert L. Matheny said with the additional property, ENMU-C hoped to consolidate all of its programs in one location.

Most academic courses were being taught in the old Eugene Field Elementary School at 615 Axtell in a 1920s building considered beyond rehabilitation.

1957: The Eastern Plains Regional Library was gearing up to deploy its first "bookmobile" to serve a five-county area with a new 13-foot long vehicle designed to carry 1,600 books.

The target audiences were the rural areas in Curry, De Baca, Guadalupe, Quay, and Roosevelt counties, an area of more than 12,000 square miles.

James Nation, the regional librarian, was soliciting feedback from rural residents in that area to help determine where regular stops would be made each month.

Development of rural library service was funded by the Library Services Act, approved by the United States Congress in 1956.
