ENMU's Mesquita named All-Heartland

PORTALES — A hot finish helped Eastern New Mexico University freshman Christopher Mesquita land a spot on the All-Heartland Conference men’s soccer team.

Mesquita, a Roswell native, led the Greyhounds with eight goals, including five goals in his final five games, to garner third-team selection.

Midwestern State, which went 16-0-2 and allowed eight goals the entire regular season, took the lion’s share of conference awards, including the player of the year in Pierre Bocquet, the freshman of the year in Carlos Flores and Doug Elder as coach of the year.

Only three freshman were selected to the all-conference teams. Flores was on the first team, while Mesquita and Ethan Martinez of Dallas Baptist were third-team selections.

The conference selected Brandon Lee of Texas Permian Basin as offensive player of the year and Ty Mobley of St. Edward’s as defensive player of the year.

The Greyhounds went 4-13-1 for a fourth-place finish in the Heartland’s West Division.
