PORTALES — A staple of Portales’ business district is closing after 62 years.
Woody’s Jewelry will hold a liquidation sale Thursday through Sunday, according to its promotional advertising.
Owner Danny Woodward said the store will close on Dec. 27. He was unable to talk about the closing on Monday, but the message on the store’s answering machine reports:
“After 62 wonderful years and two generations in business, Danny and Chris (Woodward) are retiring. Thanks to all who have made Woody’s Jewelry a great success.”
The business was opened by H.L. and Myrtice Woodward on March 1, 1955, according to Woody’s website.
“After being wounded in World War II, Woody went to the Thompson’s School of Practical Watchmaking in Kansas City (Missouri), where he learned watch and jewelry repair. The store began as mostly repair, but the couple expanded inventory as they grew,” the website reports.
In 1962, the business moved to its current location at 117 W. Second St., and doubled in size after a remodel in 2006, according to the website.
