ALBUQUERQUE — A day after scoring three points on 1-of-3 shooting, Arcaim Lallemand posted a game-high 17 points and came a rebound short of a double-double to help Eastern New Mexico University take a 66-61 victory Sunday evening over New Mexico Highlands.
The Greyhounds led nearly wire-to-wire to start the season 2-0 for the first tie in three years and only the second time since 2003-04.
“This game was decided by physicality and rebounding,” ENMU coach Tres Segler said in a school release. “I was incredibly proud of how our guys blocked out, and we grabbed some huge rebounds down the stretch that won us the game. New Mexico Highlands has some great scorers and Coach Snow puts them in positions to make plays. Our guys trusted each other and played great team defense to get big stops. This is a huge team win for us. These guys believe in each other and I see their joy for one another when we compete.”
The game, part of the RMAC-LSC challenge, evened the four-game series at two wins for each conference. Fort Lewis and NMHU topped Western New Mexico in the other gaes.
Lallemand, a 6-foot-6 forward from Naples, Florida, shot 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-5 from the line while grabbing nine rebounds and distributing one assist.
“Arcaim was incredible tonight,” Segler said. “He is a guy we all believe in, and I was so happy to watch him believe more in his own offensive abilities.”
Lamarquis Thompson, who hit a game-winning 3-pointer Saturday in an upset over Fort Lewis, posted 13 points and five rebounds in 30 minutes.
The Hounds head to Monmouth, Oregon, this week to take on Dixie State and Azusa Pacific. Tipoff in both matches is slated for 6 p.m.
Women fall to Fort Lewis
In Colorado, Vivian Gray went off for 30 points and nine rebounds as Fort Lewis claimed a 71-54 win over the Hounds.
Astrea Reed added 17 for the Skyhawks (2-0), who led by as many as 22 in the fourth.
Gray and Reed scored nine points in a 13-2 run over the final three minutes of the third quarter to pull away.
The Greyhounds had no double-figure scorers but balanced scoring, with five players between seven and nine points. Shelby Jones had nine points and 12 boards to lead the Greyhounds, who head back to Colorado Thursday to take on Colorado State-Pueblo.
Mikaehla Connor had seven points and seven rebounds in 33 minutes of action for ENMU (0-2).
