1987: Stephanie Storrie of Clovis captured the title of Miss New Mexico USA in a weekend competition in Ruidoso, becoming the first Clovis woman to win the state title in the competition's history.
Storrie, 22, said only her closest friends and family members were in on her decision to enter the pageant again after a loss the year before.
"I didn't want very many people to know in case I didn't win," she said. "Last year I found out how to lose. This year I found out how to win."
1982: Eastern New Mexico University football coach Dunny Goode resigned his coaching position, saying in a press conference that his choice was "resign or be fired."
Goode had nothing but compliments for his players, fellow faculty members, and the people in Roosevelt County, but was quoted in the Clovis News-Journal as saying that the coaching situation was "the poorest I have been associated with."
He cited a shortage of coaching staff, a lack of equipment funds, plus "the worst field house in America" and "a stadium out in a quail patch."
