LAS VEGAS, New Mexico — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, walloping New Mexico Highlands 53-34 at the John A. Wilson Complex, and improving to 1-2 in the process.
Defense paved the way for Eastern’s momentous win, holding the Cowgirls to those 34 points on just 22 percent shooting. NMHU’s point total was the fewest allowed by ENMU since 2006, and the first time the Greyhounds held an opponent to less than 40 since 2013. It was a refreshing and necessary change from their first two games, in which they allowed more than 70 points each.
The Hounds also came up with 11 steals on Saturday, topping last season’s high by five.
Eastern had balanced scoring, led by Kaylee Edgemon’s 11 points. Shelby Jones was next with 10 points, followed by Jasmine Hotchkins with eight points.
Mikaehla Connor ripped down nine rebounds and collected two steals. Daeshi McCants contributed five rebounds.
Ari Baca was NMHU’s top scorer with 11, tying Edgemon for the game-high.
The Greyhounds outrebounded NMH by an impressive 39-27 count, including an 18-8 difference on the offensive boards.
Eastern won its third straight against New Mexico Highlands, and now leads the all-time series 37-8.
The Hounds will next play after the Thanksgiving holiday, returning to action Friday at the Pak-a-Sak Tournament, hosted by West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas. They tip off against Colorado State-Pueblo at 11 a.m.
