1972: Gattis Junior High students collected almost 1,100 cans of food in a two-day drive to benefit the Salvation Army for the coming holidays.
Waylon Burch, social studies teacher at the school, spearheaded the drive, and students brought food from home to contribute to a mountain of goods that appeared in a Clovis News-Journal photo.
Students Kay Brown, Richard Hester, Randy Lopez, and Nancy Newberry were shown gathering the goodies up to be delivered later that day.
