Portales girls improve to 2-0

CLOVIS — The Rams needed just one quarter to get into a groove, before routing the St. Michael’s Horsemen in the first round of the Clovis Shootout Friday night. Portales led, 14-13, after one quarter, but proceeded to allow just 25 points the rest of the way, in a 72-38 victory.

Portales (2-0) outscored St. Mike’s (1-2) 22-8 in the second quarter, and ran away from there. Taylee Rippee finished with a double-double, as she led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Zamorye Cox added 11 points, nine assists and eight boards of her own.

“It started off back and forth, same as the Muleshoe game (Tuesday night),” Rams coach Wade Fraze explained. “We played some defense for awhile, and then we would have breakdowns and start fouling too much. (St. Mike’s) had 10 free throw attempts in the first quarter, alone. But after that, we really settled in and we only sent St. Mike’s to the line eight times the rest of the game and pulled away.”

Portales will play Clovis tonight at 5:30 in the second round of the Clovis Shootout, while St. Mike’s takes on Texico at 1.
