1977: Two Friona juveniles were in custody after an early-morning break-in and shoot-out at Rip's Western Wear in Texico.

No one was injured during the incident, which involved the juvenile suspects facing down Texico Marshal Mickey Fenn, store owner Roy Snodgrass, and a number of Clovis police officers.

The burglar alarm at Rip's was triggered at 2:13 a.m. when glass was broken and suspects entered the building.

Five Clovis police units responded to the incident, and two shotguns were recovered after arrests were made.

1972: A couple of dozen preschoolers escaped with only scrapes and bruises after the bus they were in overturned on icy roads near Cannon Air Force Base.

The children, all CAFB dependents, were students at Humphrey's Kindergarten, which also owned and operated the bus.

All of the tots were taken to the CAFB hospital, where four were treated and released later that day. The others were not hurt.

Wanda Humphrey, owner of the kindergarten, told the Clovis News-Journal, "We're fortunate in this kind of weather to not have had any serious injuries."
