PORTALES — Sophomore Christian Little scored 17 points, including a go-ahead layup with 15:27 to play, and the Regis Rangers pulled away in the second half to top Eastern New Mexico 68-61 in the final pre-Christmas game for both teams.
Jarrett Brodbeck and Dexter Sienko both added 14 for Regis (10-2), which won its second straight game and fourth in its last five contests.
Little, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year last season, shot 6-of-11 on an array of layups and midrange jumpers with no 3-point attempts. Brodbeck attempted 13 of his 14 attempts from beyond the arc, hitting four.
Shawn Shelton, who scored 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting and tied for team high with six rebounds, was the only double-figure scorer for the Greyhounds (4-8).
The contest featured four ties and five lead changes, with neither team leading by more than eight for the first 34 minutes. The Greyhounds' biggest lead was four, hit just once when Maurice Coleman scored on a layup just over three minutes into the game.
The Rangers led 35-32 at the half, only to see Shelton score the first two baskets of the second half for ENMU's first lead since the opening minutes. Little hit a jumper with 16:53 left to make it 37-36, and the Hounds would never lead again.
Brodbeck hit a 3-pointer with six minutes to play, kickstarting a 10-1 run that made it 65-52. Eastern never got closer than the final margin.
The teams were even in most categories, with shooting just under 40 percent — 22-of-56 for ENMU, 23-of-60 for Regis — and a 42-40 rebounding edge for the Rangers. The one difference was free throws, as Eastern went 10-of-17 and the Rangers were 18-of-28.
The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 65 — much of the student body left town following Saturday commencement ceremonies, and the 3 p.m. start meant many Greyhound fans were still at work.
The Greyhounds are in action again on Dec. 30, as they will visit Lubbock Christian for a 1 p.m. MST tipoff. The Rangers get back to RMAC play by visiting Fort Lewis, also Dec. 30.
