1977: David G. Brown had been appointed the new chief of the Portales Police Department, effective Jan. 3, 1978.

Brown came to the job after serving two years as head of a five-county regional child-support program.

He had previously been associated with the district attorney's office in Portales, assigned to child-support cases. That position became federally funded and he ended up supervising those cases in five eastern New Mexico counties.

Tom Plumlee, Portales city manager, made the announcement of the new chief.
