1987: The Portales Rams basketball team defeated the Clovis Wildcats, 52-50, to win the championship of the Holiday Classic hosted by Clovis.
The game came down to a nail-biting long final second after Portales' Collin Hilliard sank a shot with only three seconds left to break the 50-50 tie. The clock was stopped with only one second left as Portales called a timeout, followed by a Clovis timeout, followed by another Portales timeout.
The Wildcats' Tyrone Byrd hurled a long-distance final desperation shot that rolled around the rim before falling out, as Portales fans went wild.
Byrd made the all-tournament team, along with Wildcats Pete Robbins and Russell Dial. Portales Rams who got all-tournament nods were Hilliard and David Shields. Hilliard was named Most Valuable Player.
1947: New Mexicans had one more day to legally operate their motor vehicles without 1948 operators' licenses as well as new brake and light stickers.
State Policeman Jimmy Clark told the Clovis News-Journal that "scores of residents of Curry County" had failed to secure driving permits for the coming year, and that many vehicles also lacked the required inspection stickers for their lights and brakes.
Clark warned that police planned to crack down on violators starting on the first day of the new year, and violators would be subject to a $25 fine, plus court costs.
