TEXICO — The Texico High Wolverines will go for a tournament sweep tonight in the Citizens Bank Tournament, with both teams comfortably winning their semifinal matches Friday.
Texico's girls cruised past Santa Rosa 63-21, while the boys improved to 10-0 on the season with a 55-43 win over Newcomb.
Tonight's girls title matchup will be the Texico girls (8-3) facing Robertson, the top-ranked team in 4A, in a 5:45 p.m. matchup. The Cardinals defeated Eunice 25-23. The Texico boys will follow at 7:15 p.m. against Farwell, a 52-45 winner over Tularosa.
The Texico girls never trailed against Santa Rosa, bolting out to leads of 6-0 and 10-2 while holding the Lions without a field goal for the first 5:28. The Wolverines extended the lead to 32-12 late in the second quarter, and rolled in the second half.
Maryelle Dickerman had 14 to lead Texico in a balanced effort, with Alexus Hill (11) the game's only other double-figure scorer. In all, 11 players scored for Texico, including nine by Baylee Sours and eight by Mackenzie Haakma.
The Texico boys, behind 22 from Nathan Phipps, slowly pulled away from the Skyhawks (11-3).
Shannon Bitsilly and Deondre Begay each hit two of Newcomb's eight 3-pointers to reach double digits. Bitsilly scored 15 to lead Newcomb, which will face Tularosa in the 4 p.m. third-place game.
Paden McDermid scored nine for Texico, while four others added at least five.
