Officials: Be wary of iced over ponds

CLOVIS — Baby, it’s cold outside — but not that cold.

Emergency responders on Thursday afternoon received a report that somebody had fallen through the ice at Dennis Chavez lake in west Clovis.

Clovis Fire Chief Mike Nolen said the individual had already gotten out of the water and was sitting on a guardrail and waiting when emergency personnel arrived.

Though local bodies of water may appear to be frozen, Nolen said the ice is not thick enough for people to walk or skate on.

“We’ve had such temperature changes ... that it’s very light ice; that’s not thick enough to be out on,” Nolen said.
