Public comment rules up for approval

PORTALES — Public comment at Roosevelt County Commission meetings will have a new set of rules if an item at today's meeting is approved.

The resolution, titled "public participation at Roosevelt County Commission meetings," calls for a time limit of three minutes per commenter, a limit of one public comment per person, and a restriction of interruptions from the audience.

Commenters will also be restricted from being disruptive or engaging in personal attacks against commissioners or county employees.

If the resolution is approved, the commission will join the Portales City Council in having a time limit on public comment sessions — the council approved a resolution limiting speakers to three minutes each in September.

Also at today's meeting at 9 a.m. in the Roosevelt County Courthouse:

• Recognition of the Roosevelt County Sheriff's Office for its assistance during the Clovis-Carver Public Library shooting in August.

• The election of the commission's chairman and vice chairman for 2018.

• Consideration of approval of a New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management disaster assistance grant.

• Possible approval of 2018 Roosevelt County committee assignments.

• Consideration of a resolution on compliance with the New Mexico Open Meetings Act.

• Consideration of second quarter budget adjustments.
