Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
CLOVIS — Before you can run, you need to walk, and before you can walk, you need to eat.
The Clovis Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission will once again hold a scholarship breakfast on Saturday before the group’s annual symbolic walk and rally on Monday.
Saturday’s scholarship breakfast, which begins at 9 a.m. at the Clovis High School Cafeteria, will honor the winners of this year’s speech, poster and essay contests.
The top three finishers in each category will receive a gold, silver or bronze medallion with their name on it and first-place winners will receive a cash prize dependent on their grade.
First-place finishers from the high school will receive $75, middle schoolers will receive $50, elementary students will receive $25 and kindergarten and first grade students will receive $15.
President of the Clovis Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission Joyce Pollard said money for the cash prizes comes from the state’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and donations from local individuals, businesses and churches.
The winners of the speech competitions will read the speeches at the breakfast. Song and dance performances from students at Parkview Elementary and Arts Academy at Bella Vista are also on tap for Saturday.
Van Tate, a sportscaster from Albuquerque, will be on hand as the guest speaker.
“We choose him because we thought he was knowledgeable about what we were trying to get through to young people,” Pollard said. “We’re focusing on youth and thought he would be a good person who has the knowledge of what’s going on in the world and relate that to our young people.”
Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door and a table of eight can be reserved for $100.
