Boys improve to 17-0 in nightcap
LOGAN — A rematch of the Eastern Plains Athletic Conference girls title game ... wasn’t much of a rematch.
Baylee Sours scored 10 of her game-high 23 points in the first quarter, and Texico never looked back in a 46-27 victory Thursday night in Logan.
Jasmine Davalos added 11 for the Wolverines (13-3), who won their seventh-straight.
Texico, which had just edged the Longhorns 30-29 Saturday in the EPAC title game at Greyhound Arena, needed just the first half to match that output as they raced to a 30-13 advantage at the break.
“I think we were able to pressure them a little bit more, get some turnovers,” Texico coach Richard Luscombe said. “We played really good defense ... and we were able to get some baskets off of it. I felt like we came out ready.”
Karli Webb scored seven points to lead the Longhorns (11-3), who have only lost to Texico and 3A Tucumcari. They get a rematch with the Rattlers (16-0) next Saturday.
Texico travels to Tatum Saturday for an 11 a.m. neutral-site contest with Loving.
In the boys game, Texico improved to 17-0 with a 74-57 victory. Nathan Phipps had 21 points to lead three Wolverines in double figures. Skyler Davis had 18 and Dalton Thatcher 16 for Texico, which took over with a 21-12 third-quarter effort.
