Big second quarter pushes Portales past Goddard

ROSWELL — After a slow start, the Portales girls basketball team surged in the second quarter of Tuesday night's win over Goddard. The Rams outscored the Rockets, 20-4, en route to a 65-41 victory.

"We started off horrible, down 10-2. We just did nothing right," Rams coach Wade Fraze explained. "But we adjusted and played much better in the second quarter, and basically the final three quarters."

Portales (17-2) trailed by four to start the second quarter, but turned around and allowed just four points total in the second period. Goddard (11-8) settled for 23 points after the first quarter, after scoring 18 in the opening period, alone.

Zamorye Cox had a spectacular game, as she came up one assist shy of a triple-double. Cox' final stat line was 19 points, 11 steals and nine assists. Lindsay Blakey also added 19 points, while Taylee Rippee had 11 points and six boards.

Portales will now open up district play at home on Friday night, when it takes on mighty Moriarty. The top-ranked Pintos currently sit at 17-0, and had an impressive win over third-ranked Robertson back on Jan. 5, winning 63-51. According to Fraze, Alyssa Adams notched more than 40 points against Robertson.

"They basically just play solid basketball," Fraze said, "which we didn't do tonight. We can't come out and play like that against Moriarty - we've got to play complete basketball for 32 minutes."
