Boys roundup: Dora outlasts Floyd

FLOYD — Dora’s strong 22-point fourth quarter proved to be the difference in Tuesday’s 56-47 boys basketball win over Floyd. The Coyotes had four players in double figures en route to their 11th win of the season.

“We lost Jarrett East to foul trouble and that hurt us,” Floyd coach Steve Foust said of his team’s fourth quarter struggles. “We just didn’t get execution at the end of the game, but Dora did.”

Dora (11-6) and Floyd (7-7) swapped leads back and forth for three quarters, as the two were tied at 22-all at half, while Dora carried just a two-point lead into the final period. Four players finished in double-figures, led by Xavier Gramzow’s 14 points, plus Zac Dewbre (13), Slade Hamann (12) and Haiden Padgett (11).

As for the Broncos, Adrian Borrego had 20 points and four of the team’s 10 3-pointer’s on the night. Floyd will next play district opponent Melrose on Thursday, in what is sure to be a tough battle.

For Foust, his young team has shown promise to this point in the season, and they’re still growing.

“We had some great games and great quality wins,” Foust explained. “We’re still young and still developing kids, but it’s been a great season. (Melrose) works hard and they play a physical game, but if we come out prepared and execute better, we can win.”

Farwell 64, Lockney 36 - Jackson Jarman had 16 to lead four in double figures as the Steers improved to 2-0 in district.

Roberto Trevizo added 13, Brandon Galvan 12 and Ramon Reyes 11 for Farwell (13-7), which took control early with a 23-13 first-quarter.

The Steers hit eight 3-pointers on the night between four players, with Jarman hitting four.

Grady 72, Roy/Mosquero 50 - Josh Betts had just six points, but he may have had the biggest basket with a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer for a 34-27 halftime lead.

"Going into the half, if we didn't hit that 3-pointer we'd only be up four. When he hit that, it fired us up a little bit. We came out after them in the second half."

As usual, Chisum Rush and Lucas Whitehead provided all the offense the Bronchos (10-7) would need in their non-district matchup. Rush scored 29 points and hit Grady's other two treys, while Whitehead scored 25.
