Eldorado boys rout Wildcats in district opener

ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis Wildcats had a puncher’s chance late in the second quarter, and even still going into half against the top-ranked Eldorado Eagles.

And then the third quarter happened. Any doubt that remained was obliterated with a 27-0 third, as the Eagles took a 70-29 victory over the Wildcats in the District 2-6A opener for both teams.

Clovis (8-8, 0-1), led by Brandon Romero’s 19 points, only trailed 31-18 at the break before things fell apart.

“We couldn’t buy a basket,” Clovis coach Scott Robinson said. “Sometimes things are not overly complicated.

“At one point in the first half, we have it 26-18 and we had a few turnovers. We talked about it being important to come out in the third quarter. They got on a roll, and we struggled to say the least. We had some good looks at the basket. Things kind of snowballed. The more they made, the more we missed.”

Jakeem Wynn scored six points, while Bryce Cabeldue and Jacob Moon each hit a 3-pointer for the Wildcats.

David Tyler Rogers scored 22 to lead four in double figures for the Eagles (12-2, 1-0).

The Wildcats are on the road again Saturday, as they face Manzano.
