Reporter's notebook: Map smarts

CLOVIS — Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? I couldn’t tell you, but I bet Roman Galvan can.

Roman, an eighth grader at Yucca Middle School, won the Clovis school district’s 30th annual Geography Bee last Wednesday.

Put on by National Geographic, the competition featured 29 students who had to answer questions on a range of categories including states, continents and state birds.

The competition also included a round where the students were given a location on a map and a set of directions and had 15 seconds to navigate the map and determine where they ended up.

Roman won the competition two years ago as a sixth grader as well.

If he completes a qualifying test, he will move on to the state bee on April 6 and if he has enough success there he could move on to the national bee that takes place May 20-23 in Washington, D.C.
