Clovis girls start fast, cruise by Santa Fe

SANTA FE — A look at the overall records would indicate that even as the road team, the Clovis Wildcats were a slight favorite over the Santa Fe Demons.

But games aren't played on paper, and Clovis didn't take any advantage for granted in a 49-31 victory for their second District 2-6A win Tuesday night.

Teya Morris scored 18 points, including a 10-for-10 effort from the line, and Mikyla Harkley added 11 in a game that belonged to Clovis (11-8, 2-1) from the tip.

"We had a great start," Clovis coach Jeff Reed said. "We pressed, got after them, caused a lot of turnovers. We were able to get some easy baskets, fluster Santa Fe from the beginning. That's really what saw us through. We don't have that start, it could be a whole different game."

Adonica Baca-Martinez scored 16 for the Demons (9-10, 0-3), but nobody else had more than five points on the night.

"Defensively, I couldn't be more pleased with our last two games' effort," Reed said. "The defense was great. Second half, we slacked off a little bit, but the damage had been done."

Clovis, playing its second full game since losing sophomore post Madison Tolbert to a knee injury, got enough points from the press and perimeter play but continues to progress on interior scoring.

"We had other girls who stepped up inside, but just couldn't finish," Reed said. "Antanishwa (Molett, five points) gets a lot of inside shoes, goes 1-for-7 at the line. We're getting the opportunities, and we've just got to put them in."

Clovis is back on the road Saturday to face Sandia with a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.
