Dora schools close due to illness

DORA — Schools in Dora will be closed today due to a number of staff members suffering from illnesses.

Dora Schools Interim Superintendent/Principal Brandon Hays said the student population has not been affected more than other area schools, but rather he just did not believe they would be able to adequately cover all classrooms due to the number of staff members who are out.

“It’s not because we have an epidemic or pandemic or all the kids are falling down sick, it’s because our staff is small and it just hit all our staff at one time and it hit our substitutes, too,” Hays said.

The school will be sanitized before students return on Monday.

In a letter to parents, Hays asked not to send children to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours without medication or if they have thrown up during the night or the morning before school.

Other area schools reported attendance was down in recent days, but not significantly.

Portales Superintendent Johnnie Cain said attendance has been about 15 to 20 percent less than normal. Seven teachers and several support staff missed school on Wednesday, Cain said.

In Clovis, Deputy Superintendent of Operations Carrie Bunce said officials have noticed “a slight” decline in attendance, “but I don’t believe it is as bad as in neighboring districts.”
