Last week I talked about some of the looks on the runways for the menswear fashion shows in Paris that took place on Jan. 18. I gave a few descriptions of some of the looks that stood out on the runways.
For example, men in pink and purple track pants and biker shorts inspired a message from my editor asking exactly what track pants are. I explained to him that they are sportswear pants with the stripes down the side of them. "Racing stripes?," he asked. "That's what you should've said." Then, he admitted that he wasn't tough enough to wear pink. Which leads me to further explain a bit more of what's happening in menswear for 2018. You can decide if you're "tough" enough to wear these looks.
Starting with Alexander Wang who is also following the sportswear-ready-to-wear trend. But he doesn't seem to refer to his looks as athleisure. Instead, the designer is using technical fabrics with sportswear silhouettes. One example is his inspired jersey shorts made from loose wool. Another change is jean jackets with a windbreaker jacket silhouette.
Alessandro Michele for Gucci approached his design aesthetic with a deeper expression of style and wanted the media to see his work beyond the beauty of clothing but more a state of o mind. But looking at his work, there was an obvious mix of something old and something new happening. Michele has been all about glitter and glam and it shows. He has paid homage to his friend Elton John in his shows with inspiration from his early 1970s glam rock stage clothes.
With the majority of the season’s colors being off whites, purples, olive and black, there's no particular color palette anyone is sticking to. There will continue to be a variety of sweatpants and sneaker styles. Trending right now in footwear is the grandpa-inspired sneaker — a thicker sole.
But there's still a market for the men who don’t prefer the sporty look. Some outerwear trends continue to be short hemline pants, over-sized parkas, long coats and boots with outside zippers. Other details for both men and women are padded shoulders and other oversized shapes.
