LUBBOCK — Eastern New Mexico University opened its 2018 indoor track and field season hoping for positive results, as the men's team lacked depth and the women's team was still recovering from last season's rash of injuries, according to head coach Jeff Kavalunas.
Ultimately, there were many positives that came out of the Texas Tech Red & Black Open on Friday night. On the men's side, Marcus Parker won the 200 meter dash, while the women's team finished sixth in the 1,600 relay.
Parker, who had much excitement surrounding his sophomore season, took the 200 with a time of 21.29 seconds, beating out Western Texas College's Khamal Stewart-Baynes (21.48) by less than two-tenths of a second.
In the same event, another Greyhound, Travonne Armstead, placed ninth with a time of 22.61 seconds. Parker, meanwhile, was also exceptional in the 60 meter dash. The Phoenix native placed third with a time of 6.81 seconds, narrowly falling in a near-photo finish to winner Jaquone Hoyte (6.80) and runner-up Shivnarine Smalling (6.804), both of Western Texas.
In the field events, Demetry Rodriguez placed fourth in Shot Put B Section with a top throw of 44-4.25. South Plains' Markim Felix won the event with a throw of 49-11.75, followed by West Texas A & M's Austin Foster (46-9) and Angelo State's Cameron Cross (46-0).
As for the women's side, Kavalunas was hoping to make this opening event an opportunity to "shake the rust off." Nonetheless, Friday still yielded some positive results, led by the 1,600 relay team.
The Greyhounds placed sixth in the event with a time of 4:03.56. That was 15 seconds off of West Texas A&M's winning pace of 3:48.33. The rest of the top five included South Plains (3:49.01), New Mexico Junior College (3:49.36), Angelo State (3:56.17) and Wayland Baptist (3:56.57).
Adilene Adams had the best individual women's result for Eastern on Friday, as she placed second in the Weight Throw with a toss of 50-0.75 feet. That proved to be just slightly under two feet behind winner Daisy Osakue's (Angelo State) 51-8.5 foot throw.
Other field competitors who performed well on Friday night include Bryanna Williams and Hannah Cabeldue, who both finished seventh in their respective events. Williams finished with a shot put B section throw of 33-8.75, while Cabeldue's Pole Vault finished at 10-2.
On the track side, Sierra Quinones placed eighth (2:30.89) in the 800, while Coley Norcross came in sixth (11:15.01) in the 3K event. Maijah Mathis placed ninth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.81 seconds, while Kandace Miles (59.50) and Mason Swanson (59.90) placed 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 400 meter dash.
The Greyhounds will head back to Lubbock Friday and Saturday for the Texas Tech University Open.
