1983: It had taken the Texico Wolverines six overtimes to defeat the Melrose Buffaloes in a nail-biter that ended 52-48.
The teams were tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter, only the first of many times throughout the game that the score stayed even.
The score was 35-35 at the end of regulation, and then the teams matched shots through five overtime periods with ending scores of 37-37, 39-39, 44-44, 44-44 and 46-46.
Finally in the sixth overtime, the Wolverines outscored the Buffaloes 6-2 to end the marathon.
Texico’s Brad Steward led all scorers with 20 points, aided by Kevin West with 12 and Joe Steward with 8. The Buffalo effort was led by Kenny Jacobs with 14, Philip Daly with 13 and Devon Cockrell with 7.
1078: Jack Scott, Eastern New Mexico University Greyhound football coach for the past eight years, announced he was stepping down from his coaching duties, but staying on as an assistant professor in health, physical education and recreation.
Scott came to Eastern in 1970, with 18 years of head coaching already on his record.
“This is a sad decision after 26 years of coaching,” Scott said, “but I have nothing but happy memories about the young men who played here.”
Scott said the decision to step down was his idea, and that he had been under no pressure to retire.
