Portales council to discuss oil spill

PORTALES — A mineral oil spill that flooded downtown Portales on Jan. 25, disrupting traffic and potentially damaging roads, will be the topic of conversation at tonight’s Portales City Council meeting.

City Manager Sammy Standefer will provide councilors with information on the spill, which originated in the J.D. Heiskell feed manufacturing facility and covered a 3 1/2 block radius.

Also at tonight’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Memorial Building:

• A proclamation declaring February as 2-1-1 month at the request of United Way of Eastern New Mexico.

• A request to cancel the award of a bid for sewage lift station rehabilitation and re-authorize bidding on the project.

The rehabilitation of lift stations is part of the city’s community development block grant for 2016.

• Consideration of two resolutions related to the design of a reconstructed runway at the Portales Municipal Airport.

• An update on the close-out process for a grant/loan for the city’s waste water treatment plant.
