Cameron men take 60-58 win over ENMU

Jones hits late 3-pointer in wild finish.

PORTALES — LaMarquis Thompson had made it a home finale to remember, just missing a double-double and hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to send the Eastern New Mexico crowd home happy.

Delano Jones had other plans. The junior transfer guard responded with a turnaround 3-pointer, the final lead change in a 60-58 Cameron win Saturday at Greyhound Arena.

Jones scored 16, including the final seven points for the Aggies (11-15, 7-10 Lone Star Conference), who moved into sole possession of the conference's sixth spot and clinched one of the LSC's eight playoff spots with one game remaining.

The Greyhounds (10-15, 5-11) are in seventh place after Saturday, and would get a tournament berth either:

• Thursday, with a win at Angelo State and a Texas A&M-Kingsville loss to Western New Mexico, or

• Saturday, with a win at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Behind Thompson's 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots, the Greyhounds battled with the visiting Aggies throughout, with the game marked by four ties and six lead changes.

Three of those lead changes happened in the final 76 seconds. After junior guard Maurice Coleman hit a pair of free throws to make it 55-53 Eastern, Jones drew the rare four-point play, drawing contact from the Greyhounds' Jamani Pierce while hitting a trey.

The Aggies missed a pair of front-ends, giving the Greyhounds an opportunity with 15 seconds remaining. Junior guard Zach Parker, who scored 11 for the Hounds, found Thompson off the in-bounds for the 3-pointer that made it 58-57.

Jones hit his final 3-pointer off a Johann Tate inbounds, and a final 3-point attempt by Thompson was off the mark.

JV Long had 17 points to lead Cameron, which improved to 11-10 at Greyhound Arena and snapped a two-game losing streak to the Hounds.

Cameron ends its regular season early, facing Midwestern State Tuesday. The Greyhounds are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. MST Thursday tip at Angelo State.
