Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
1. Clovis police released reports that shed some light on how a suicidal criminal suspect was able to bring a gun into the Curry County jail on Feb. 1.
Officer Sanford Wagner wrote in his report that he searched Wesley Flores for a weapon, but “I do not remember if I checked his right side very well” before transporting him to jail.
Officials said Flores pulled a gun from his clothing in the jail’s pre-booking area, held a standoff with police for four hours, then shot himself in the face.
2. Court records filed Wednesday show Flores’ recovery from his self-inflicted gun shot may take up to a year.
Flores’ criminal defense attorney told the court his client would need 12 to 16 weeks healing time before he could “relearn how to talk.”
He remained hospitalized in Lubbock.
3. A Tucumcari municipal judge was suspended without pay pending a disposition on allegations he was driving while intoxicated on Feb. 4.
Joe Dominguez, 71, was arrested after failing a field sobriety test.
Dominguez is running unopposed in the March 6 municipal elections. Officials said alternates can fill in during his suspension.
4. A Clovis man who pleaded guilty to robbing a Subway sandwich shop in August was sentenced to six years in prison.
Kelby Spain, 23, ordered a sandwich before showing the store’s employee a gun and stating “give me all the money,” according to the criminal complaint alleging armed robbery.
Spain faced up to 17 1/2 years before the plea agreement.
5. Area Christians remembered the life of Rev. Billy Graham, who died at age 99.
Gary Mitchell, dean of Clovis’ campus of Wayland Baptist University, was a student in the 1970s when Graham held a news conference at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth.
“(Reporters) were asking him about a little girl’s plight ... He was knowledgeable about whatever they were asking, and he responded in kindness and with a great deal of wisdom and restraint,” Mitchell said.
“I have a tremendous respect for him and his legacy.”
