Girl’s quarterfinal capsules
Class 4A
No. 1 Portales vs. No. 9 West Las Vegas
Time and place: 11 a.m. today at The Pit, Albuquerque.
Records: Portales 25-2, West Las Vegas 19-10.
How they got here: Portales had little trouble in the 1-16 game with Bosque, winning 71-31 for their 16th-straight victory. The Dons pulled off a slight upset, topping Hope Christian 59-49 on the road.
Previous meeting: Dec. 12, Portales won at home 62-42. West Las Vegas started the season 4-0 before facing Portales, and hasn’t won more than three straight since.
Notable: Thanks to the Dons, this will be the first time in four years Portales won’t face Hope Christian in the tournament. They met in the 2016 and 2015 Class 4A semifinals and the 2014 Class 4A title game.
Winner moves on to: An 8 a.m. Thursday semifinal against either Silver or Shiprock, also at The Pit.
Class 3A
No. 1 Texico vs. No. 8 Pecos
Time and place: 11:30 a.m. today at Santa Ana Star Center, Rio Rancho
Records: Texico 23-4, Pecos 24-4.
How they got here: Texico cruised by No. 16 Santa Rosa 66-28 for their 17th win in 18 games. Pecos won its fourth straight, topping Tierra Encantada 64-32.
Previous meeting: Dec. 19, 2015, Texico 62-35.
Notable: Texico is 6-0 in tournament play this season, but it’s a little skewed because four of those games were at home between their own hoilday tournament and the second round of the Eastern Plains Athletic Conference Tournament. Pecos is 4-3 in neutral-site games.
Winner moves on to: An 11:30 a.m. Thursday semifinal against either Clayton or Tucumcari, also at the Star Center.
Class 1A
No.1 Elida vs. No. 8 Cimarron
Time and place: 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Bernalillo High School.
Records: Elida 22-7, Cimarron
How they got here: The Tigers had little problem with No. 16 Reserve, winning 45-8. Cimarron didn’t exactly break a sweat either, topping Hondo Valley 73-45.
Previous meeting: 2016 Class 1A quarterfinals, Elida 54-34.
Winner moves on to: A 1:15 p.m. Thursday semifinal, still at Bernalillo H.S., against either Coronado or Des Moines.
No. 2 Melrose vs. No. 7 Grady
Time and place: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Bernalillo High School.
Records: Melrose 21-7, Grady 17-11.
How they got here: Melrose took care of Walatowa Charter 60-36, while Grady held off 10th-seeded Springer 40-33.
Previous meeting: The District 4-1A opponents have met three times this season, with Melrose winning all three — 50-30 Jan. 25 at home, 39-31 at Grady Feb. 6 and 50-37 at home Feb. 21 in the 4-1A tournament semifinals.
Notable: Grady’s only losses in Class 1A, seven in all, came at the hands of the top three seeds — three losses to No. 1 Elida, three to No. 2 Melrose and once to No. 3 Des Moines.
Winner moves on to: A 4:45 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal, still at Bernalillo H.S. against either Quemado or Roy.
