BERNALILLO — Floyd coach Steve Foust said the other day that the key to his Broncos having a chance to beat No. 2 Maxwell in the 1A boys quarterfinal would be playing good defense.
On Wednesday, Foust’s club played pretty solid defense, but the problem was the Floyd offense in a 61-47 loss at Bernalillo High School.
“We relied too much on the 3,” Foust explained. “We couldn’t get anything going, getting to the basket, and I think their length really bothered us.”
Kolten Riggs scored 29 for Maxwell (26-1), which will bring an 18-game winning streak into its 6:30 p.m. Thursday semifinal against Reserve or Springer, also at Bernalillo High School.
Maxwell led 17-16 after the first quarter, but opened it up to seven by half. Floyd (14-10), meanwhile, was held to 19 points in the second half, as the Broncos went just 18-for-56 (32.1 percent) from the field, with nearly half of their shots (10-for-27) from 3.
Javin Chandler and Patrick Terry both scored 12 for the seventh-seeded Broncos, while Jarret East added 11.
“It has been a season of ups and downs,” Foust said. “We had some good wins in a tough district, and anytime you get to Albuquerque, it’s a success.”
