ODESSA, Texas— Eastern New Mexico’s baseball team capitalized on six UT-Permian Basin errors in a nearly-four hour, 5-2 road victory for the Greyhounds on Friday afternoon.
After Permian Basin (2-19) tied it with a Tony Oslovar RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Hounds (12-5) managed to regain the lead with an Alex DeLaCruz bases-loaded walk.
Paul Tapia then reached safely on a fielder’s choice in the top of the seventh, while Julian Heredia scored on the same play, following a Falcon error. The Falcons then countered with a run in the bottom of the seventh, following an ENMU balk, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Eastern, however, slammed the door shut in the eighth. Endy Villalona stole second base before an errant Falcon throw led to another error, advancing Villalona to third and bringing home Zach Shank. Andrew Stubbs then struck out on a pitch that got by the catcher, scoring Villalona for the Greyhounds’ third unearned run of the day.
The two squads combined for 22 runners left on base, while both sides recorded six hits apiece.
ENMU starting pitcher Jonathan joy improved to 3-0 with the win, after striking out four in 4 1/3 innings. Permian’s Matt Symczak fell to 0-5, as he was chased after just two innings.
The two Lone Star Conference foes will meet in a doubleheader today, with the first game starting at noon Mountain Time.
