Reporter's notebook: Living up to its name

It’s called March Madness for a reason but this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament has been particularly crazy. And we’re only through the first two rounds.

A No. 16 seed defeated a No. 1 seed for the first time ever in the men’s tournament when 20-point underdog University of Maryland-Baltimore County won by 20 points over the top overall seed Virginia on Friday.

Also in the South region, Nevada overcame double digit deficits in both games including a 22-point comeback against second-seeded Cincinnati, Loyola Chicago beat third-seeded Tennessee to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1985 and Buffalo pulled off an opening-round upset over fourth-seeded Arizona for its first tournament victory in school history.

All of those upsets mean the South region lost its top four seeded teams in the first weekend, the first time that’s ever happened since the tournament began seeding every team in 1979.

Closer to home, the Lone Star State became the two star state as both Texas Tech and Texas A&M advanced to the Sweet 16, the first time Texas has been represented by more than one team this late in the tournament since 1980.
