ROSWELL — The Clovis High baseball team had their insurance run, and were well on their way to heading home with the Goddard Invitational championship.
Turned out the host Rockets had other plans, and spoiled the Wildcats’ plans with three two-out runs for a 4-3 win Saturday night.
Mason Sonive delivered the game-winning single for Goddard, which moved to 8-0.
Clovis, which dropped to 9-3, got 20 outs just fine. The 21st proved elusive.
“We’ve got two outs, runner on second,” Clovis coach Richard Cruce said. “We walk a guy, make an error and it just snowballed from there.”
Cam Kuykendall went 2-for-4 with a triple for Clovis, while Anthony Gonzales and Joe Gallegos each had 2-for-3 nights.
The Wildcats resume the season on the road Thursday in the Sal Puentes Tournament.
