ENMU's Junior Preview Day set for Saturday

PORTALES — Area high school students with college interests have plenty of options.

Eastern New Mexico University hopes its Junior Preview Day on Saturday will help answer any questions.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m., offering building tours, information on classes and degree programs and information for parents, according to Cody Spitz, director of enrollment at ENMU.

“They get an academic fair, they get to visit some of our major rooms. We go through the science building and they get to see our science room and our labs, then we’re gonna take them over to our liberal arts building where they get to see general classrooms of what they’ll get to experience,” he said.

Events for parents include financial aid presentations and meetings with ENMU Student Affairs members and ENMU President’s Ambassadors.

Both Spitz and ENMU President Jeff Elwell said many students who visit the campus as high school juniors return as college freshmen.

“I would say a significant portion of students who come to campus, and especially for the preview days, end up coming to Eastern New Mexico (University),” Elwell said.

Many people think about college long before they start applying, according to Elwell, and where a student goes often depends on their initial experience.

“I think, for the students, they get a sense of what the campus is like, the people who are here, what the students are like, and a lot of people — students and parents — end up liking Eastern because of who and what we are,” he said.
