Portales softball team picks up first win

Rams (1-2) score nine in first inning in 16-5 win over Miyamura.

RIO RANCHO — Three games into the season, the Portales Ram softball team found its offense.

The Rams opened up the Rio Rancho Tournament with a nine-run first inning en route to a 16-5 win over Class 5A Miyamura Thursday afternoon.

Abby Cameron went 5-for-5 with a double and 3 RBIs to lead a 22-hit attack for Portales (1-2), which opened its season on the other end of a Lovington sweep Saturday.

"We just talked about playing relaxed," Portales coach Nathan Dodge said. "I think we were stressing the first two games. We were swinging at bad pitches and watching third strikes go by. Today we didn't do that."

Kimberlie Hay went 3-for-5 for Portales with a pair of doubles.

With leads of 9-0 after one and 10-0 entering the second, Dodge was a little surprised the game went six innings before mercy rules kicked in. But he credited Miyamura for responding with three in the bottom of the second and limiting damage the rest of the afternoon.

"We had some hard-hit balls, but they were just at people. That's the way it goes sometime."

Portales will play twice today — 9 a.m. against Valencia and the second game to be determined.
