Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Easter egg events set for Saturday in Clovis, Portales.
With spring upon us, Portales and Clovis are readying for thousands of Easter eggs, hundreds of children, and a popular bunny.
That’s right, Easter egg hunt season has arrived, and both communities have prepared events for Saturday.
The fun begins at 9 a.m. at the Guy Leeder Softball Complex in Clovis, where 9,000 Easter eggs are ripe for the picking, according to Clovis Assistant City Clerk Vicki Reyes. She said the city decided on 9,000 instead of the usual 4,000 due to demand.
“We just have really, really large crowds of kids, and we figured with the 4,000, that was giving each kid maybe two eggs. We thought this would kind of help give everybody something,” she said.
The hunt will divide children ages zero to 11 into fields, where they will be allowed to scramble to find their treasure.
After the hunters have claimed their bounty, drawings for Easter baskets and bicycles will be held.
And what Easter party would be complete without a bunny?
“The littler ones, they like to come in their Easter outfits, and the first thing they do is come and try to find the Easter Bunny. They go and take pictures and it’s like their Santa Claus for a minute,” Reyes said.
After the morning festivities are over, egg hunters can head down to the Portales Softball Complex at 2 p.m. to enjoy more action.
Portales Assistant City Clerk Veda Urioste said that event will be similarly separated between ages zero to 10.
“We’ve had really good turnouts and pretty close to 4,000 eggs that were donated at the end of Easter last year, so that’s what we’re working with now,” she said.
No one will leave empty handed, according to Urioste, not even the latecomers; candy too large to fit in Easter eggs will be given out by the handful, she said.
Urioste said the satisfaction on a child’s face after a good hunt makes the entire venture worthwhile.
“My favorite part is seeing the kids, their smiles with their baskets full of eggs walking out of the field,” she said, adding that donations for candy are still being accepted, and can be dropped off at Portales City Hall.
