Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
CLOVIS — The Clovis High tennis teams are making some progress in District 2-6A competition, even if the scores have yet to reflect it.
For the second consecutive weekend, the Wildcat teams suffered 9-0 losses to a 2-6A opponent at home. This time, it was La Cueva winning at the Clovis Community College courts.
In both the girls and boys competition, the Bears never went to a third set, with the Clovis boys winning 17 games and the Clovis girls 10 games in the singles and doubles flights.
Clovis coach Brad Heath liked the effort he saw, particularly considering four of Clovis' girls players were freshmen.
"I thought Jadan Anderson played her best match today," Heath said of the No. 1 singles match, won 6-0, 6-2 by La Cueva's Kallista Kunzler. "She was more aggressive. She's playing better competition, but I felt like she played well from her side.
"Jazmine (Wilson) and Tamara (Ogletree) played very well. I think Abby Williams played tough, both in doubles and in singles."
No singles player for Clovis took more than three games in any set, but Dyllin Gallegos and David Heath did push Brandon Briganti and Grant Hendrickson in No. 2 doubles, with Gallegos posting solid serves and Heath winning his share of net battles in a 6-4, 6-4 setback.
"Dylin and David played very well in doubles," Coach Heath said. "That's Dylin's second time playing doubles, and it was against a really good team."
The Wildcats will host Santa Fe 1:30 p.m. Friday, most likely at CCC.
