Several million Americans celebrated a holiday on Monday, but you wouldn’t know it living in New Mexico.
Patriots’ Day (or Patriot’s Day as it’s known in Maine) is held annually on the third Monday in April to commemorate the Battles of Lexington and Concord, which kicked off the Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775.
Massachusetts began celebrating Patriots’ Day in 1894 and was later followed by Maine (1907), Wisconsin (2001) and for the first time this year, Connecticut.
The holiday coincides with a pair of popular sporting events in Massachusetts: the Boston Marathon, held every year since 1897, and an early morning Boston Red Sox game, a tradition that began in the 1960s.
On Monday, Yuki Kawauchi won the men’s race and Desiree Linden became the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years. The Red Sox game was postponed due to rain, the first time they haven’t played on Patriots’ Day since 1995.
